Coalhouse Fort is an artillery fort on the north bank of the Thames near East Tilbury, built in the 1860s to guard the lower river from seaborne attack — more history here if that sort of thing interests you. Crabbing-wise it’s a decent, low-key spot rather than a destination in itself — good for a couple of hours rather than a full day out. If you want a fuller family day with some crabbing, Maldon Promenade Park is the better Essex option.

Crabbing at the Lake
The crabbing here is on the model boating lake rather than the river itself, which keeps it simple and contained — easy to manage with kids and no tides to plan around. It’s a relaxed, pleasant spot rather than a big-haul location; treat it as part of a wider visit rather than the main event.

There’s a café on site, but stocking crabbing kit seems hit and miss. Take your own equipment and bait to be safe.
Parking & Getting There
Parking is free and on site, which is one of the easier parts of a visit here — no need to plan around pay machines or limited spaces.
What Else Is There
Beyond crabbing, there’s a model boating lake, an adventure playground, and the fort itself to wander around outside — though unfortunately you can no longer get inside the fort, which is a shame as it looks the part from the outside. It’s enough to fill a couple of hours, not a full day.
If you want a proper meal afterwards, stop at The Ship pub — you’ll drive straight past it on the way in so it’s hard to miss. The fish and chips are lovely.

Dogs are welcome around the site, and the lake setting is generally easygoing for families — no major hazards beyond the usual care needed near water.

Coalhouse Fort is a pleasant couple of hours rather than a full day’s outing — good for a walk, some relaxed crabbing on the lake, and a bit of history, with a decent pub on the way home. If you’re after a bigger family day out in Essex, Crabbing at Maldon Promenade Park is the stronger choice.
