Kingsbridge might not be the first place people think of for crabbing in South Devon, but honestly, it’s one of my favourite chilled-out spots. It’s right at the head of the Salcombe–Kingsbridge Estuary, so you get those calm, tidal waters without the hustle and bustle you find in bigger seaside towns.
🎣 The crabbing itself
The quayside is long and open, which means there’s plenty of space to set up without feeling crowded. The water’s brackish here, so you get a mix of small but lively shore crabs. The kids love watching the mud and weed swaying below the surface as the tide moves in and out — you can almost see the crabs scuttling about before you pull them up.
Because the current is gentle, it’s a really easy place for beginners, especially younger children. It’s the sort of spot where you can drop a line, have a natter, and before you know it, the bucket’s got a few new residents.
🪱 Where to get bait and gear
If you haven’t brought your own kit, there are small local shops and newsagents in Kingsbridge that stock buckets, lines, and bacon. Some of the cafés along the front sometimes have packets of bait for sale too — worth popping your head in and asking.
🚗 Parking
The Quay Car Park is right next to the water, so you can pretty much park up and be crabbing within a couple of minutes. It’s pay-and-display, and in peak summer it can fill up, but it’s much less stressful than parking in somewhere like Salcombe.
🍦 Nearby facilities & food
One of the big perks here is how close you are to the town. You’ve got cafés, pubs, bakeries, and an ice cream shop all within a few minutes’ walk. Public toilets are just by the quayside too — handy when you’ve got little ones.
🦺 Safety & accessibility
The quayside is flat and wide, making it accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs. There’s no barrier between you and the water in some areas, so supervision is important, especially for smaller kids.
📝 Final thoughts
Kingsbridge Quayside is a bit of a hidden gem for crabbing. It’s relaxed, easy to get to, and has everything you need within arm’s reach. Perfect for a lazy afternoon by the water with a line, a bucket, and an ice cream to hand.
