Stoke Gabriel Crabbing Spot

Features

  • Public toilets café by the quay village pub.

If you’re looking for a peaceful, safe, and genuinely fun crabbing spot in Devon, Stoke Gabriel is right up there. We’ve been here a few times on family holidays, and it always ends up being one of the highlights — not just for the kids, but for me too.

The crabbing itself

The crabbing here happens around the old mill pond and down by the quay where the River Dart gently flows in. It’s perfect for younger kids because the water’s calm and there’s usually a spot to settle in, drop a line and wait. We’ve caught loads of little shore crabs here — nothing huge, but enough to keep the kids grinning for hours. Just make sure to bring a bucket and some bacon or mackerel — they go mad for it.

Where to get bait and gear

The River Shack Café, which sits right next to the quay, actually sells crabbing gear in the summer — lines, nets, buckets and even bait. That’s saved us more than once when we’ve forgotten something! It’s such a relaxed little setup, and the staff are friendly and used to families turning up in wellies with excited kids.

Parking

There’s a small car park right in Stoke Gabriel village, just a short walk from the crabbing area. It’s pay-and-display, so bring some change or a card. On sunny weekends it fills up fairly quickly, so I’d suggest turning up mid-morning if you want a good spot and time to grab a coffee.

Nearby facilities & food

Right by the quay is the River Shack Café, which does great breakfast baps, hot drinks, and ice cream. We usually treat ourselves to something after a crabbing session — it’s part of the tradition now! The café has toilets (super useful with kids), and the village has a small local shop if you need bits and bobs.

There’s also a lovely grassy area behind the quay if you want to bring a picnic or just let the kids run around.

📝 Final thoughts

Crabbing at Stoke Gabriel is exactly what I wanted when I first started this site — a safe, quiet, low-key spot with everything you need close by. It’s ideal for first-timers and families with younger kids, and it has that old-school Devon charm that makes you want to stay longer than planned.

If you’re heading to South Devon, make sure Stoke Gabriel’s on your list.
