Stoke Gabriel is a quiet South Devon village on the River Dart, and one of those spots that genuinely surprises you. I’ve been here myself and in just over an hour caught 20+ crabs from the quay — and looking around, pretty much everyone else was hauling them in too. It has that rare quality of feeling like a local secret that actually delivers.

🎣 The Crabbing Itself
The best spot is the quay right by the River Shack — drop a line here and you’re in business. When I visited at the end of May the crabs were thick in the water and everyone around us was catching consistently. It’s one of those spots that rewards getting your timing right rather than just turning up and hoping.
If the quay is busy, head to the Mill Pool Dam as an alternative — a different type of spot but worth trying if the main quay is packed.
🛒 Supporting Local
One of the things that makes spots like Stoke Gabriel special is exactly what makes them easy to visit — small local businesses set up right where you need them. The River Shack is a perfect example. When you’re visiting these smaller Devon villages, buying your gear, food, and drinks from the local shacks, cafés, and shops rather than stocking up at a supermarket beforehand makes a real difference to the community — and usually means better cake too.
🚗 Parking
This is the biggest challenge at Stoke Gabriel — parking is genuinely limited both down by the quay and in the village generally. There’s no easy workaround: just get there early, especially in summer. If you turn up mid-morning on a sunny day in peak season and expect to find a space easily, you’ll be disappointed.

The quay is flat and manageable for families. As always near estuary water, keep younger children within arm’s reach — the drop from the quay edge is direct into the river with no barrier.

Stoke Gabriel punches well above its size as a crabbing spot. The River Shack, the quay, the village setting — it all adds up to a lovely couple of hours if you get the parking sorted. Go early, buy local, and give the Mill Pool Dam a try if the quay’s full.
