In my book, Padstow Harbour is the epitome of corner crabbing charm—bright boats, colourful shops, and that fresh sea breeze wrapped up in a place that instantly makes you feel on holiday. As well as crabbing, Padstow town and harbour area is a nice day out in a traditional Cornish village. The small harbour reminds me of Mousehole, also in Cornwall, which is well worth a visit if you have the time. There’s no crabbing there, but it is a very picturesque Cornish village.

The Crabbing Experience
With its flat quarried quay edge, Padstow gives you a prime spot to drop your line and watch crabs dart below the water. Typically, you’ll catch plenty of eager shore crabs, and at times even slightly larger ones, depending on the tide. It’s perfect for letting kids dip their feet and take in the view, even as they patiently wait for a nudge on the line.
Here is how the harbour wall looks from the water. The best spots are just off the back or front of the boats, where the crabs will hide at low tide.

You can get bait and gear from any of the tourist shops around the harbour – or take an eco hessian net with you to avoid the plastic ones.
Parking & Access
I usually park in the bustling Padstow Harbour Car Park or North Quay Car Park—both just a short stroll from the water. The beauty of this spot is how easy it is to set up and get crabbing without lugging gear far.
Nearby Food & Treats
Padstow’s full of options. Crabbing mornings tend to end with harbour-side fish and chips—or an ice cream from a nearby parlour. There are cafés, gift shops, and fresh pastries within a few steps, making it effortless to transition from crab line to cafe table without the fuss.

Safety & Access
The quay is sturdy and mostly flat—great for wheelchairs or pushchairs—but like any open water, it’s deep. I always keep younger explorers close, hand firmly held but excitement buzzing—especially when that bucket tip means success on the line. If you walk around the side of the harbour, there is a small section with metal railings. You can still crab in this section with a little throw to get to a good spot.
Final Thoughts
Padstow Harbour isn’t just a spot to crab—it’s a seaside snapshot. It marries practicality, charm, and memorable views all in one spot. It’s a great place to make a day of it and get a chippy tea to finish the day by the seaside. There’s a great chippy called Chips Ahoy, just 2 streets back from the harbour – Directions here
